Continuing at home
The adventure continues, but along an unplanned route! Richard and I are driving home from Texas as I write this. I had planned to do a Field Internship in a Middle Eastern country, but situations changed and Richard and I believe that I am to pursue my training locally in Virginia (but not because of its geographical location!)
I’ve contacted the ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) supervisor at the adult education center in our town and I will be observing and possibly volunteering in their class. I hope to make this an at-home internship.
I want to thank you for your prayers and financial support during my time in Texas. I had a tremendous time of learning and made some good friends. Our class was a small class of five women and we lived together in a 6 bedroom house (dorm). Among the people we worked with during our practicum, were a family from an indigenous village in Peru, immigrant ladies from both Spanish-speaking countries and China, and Spanish-speaking men ordered to take English classes as “community service” for minor legal infractions. The Peruvian family is studying English so they can return to their village as translators for American doctors. Their community needs medical care, but with no translators available between their tribal language and English, they are not receiving any help. Please pray for women doctors as well as men to go to this village, as the local men do not like their wives to be tended by male doctors. Please also pray for this family’s financial support, as the free classes they were taking are ending and they will have to pay $3,600.00 for 3 months of ESL classes (including room and board). “Roger”, “Rebeca” & “David” (their English names) - Suynihuë, Inin Rona, & their son Sanquënshëca of Peru. Their first language is Shipibo, their second is Spanish, and English their third.
I did not take as many photos on this trip as on previous trips because of the nature of the course. I did not have much time or opportunity to take classroom pictures. I tried to keep my camera with me, but of course I didn’t have it the day I passed the longhorn cattle grazing in the field, or the camels, zebras and llamas grazing near the road! (You can find just about anything in Texas!!) ☺
I’m home again at 144 Mt. Vernon Ave., Portsmouth, VA, 23707. Please continue to pray for me as I seek God’s direction in this new turn.
May the Lord bless each of you abundantly as you continue to seek the Lord’s ways in your lives.
