Pickles!
Richard’s Mom makes the best bread & butter pickles! Here’s her recipe. Thanks, Mom.
7 lbs thin-sliced cucumbers
4 lbs thin-sliced onions
Mix together with 1/2 c table salt.
Cover with about 8 lbs of cracked ice.
Let stand a minimum of 3 hours.
Drain cucumbers well.
Pickling Mixture:
5 c sugar
1/2 Tbsp whole cloves
2 Tbsp celery seeds
2 Tbsp ground turmeric
3 Tbsp mustard seeds
5 c vinegar
Heat till sugar melts.
Put cucumbers & onions into pickling mixture.
Heat just to a boil and pickles start to change color.
Seal in hot, sterilized jars (wide-mouth).
Makes 9-12 pints.
